Asian Americans and Affirmative Action
The Supreme Court is set to decide two high profile cases on Affirmative Action this very week (June 25th) against Harvard and the University of North Carolina. It is generally believed that the new super majority conservative court will overrule decades of precedent that allowed race on a limited basis to be used in college admissions. This will probably be the most consequential Supreme Court ruling affecting Asian Americans in decades. Read my recent blog for a good summary of the issues and the role of Asian Americans in the Affirmative Action debate.

Chinese Americans at War
It's hard to believe but it's already been two years since my family and I accepted on behalf of my father the Congressional Gold Medal for all Chinese Americans who served in WWII. See my blog on the event. We attended the National Recognition Ceremony in Washington DC in September of 2021. While there my friends Aaron and Mimi introduced me to a new museum, the Chinese American Museum DC. I've been on their mailing list and been following many of their interesting programs. Let me recommend this webinar above in their recent series "Chinese Americans in the US Military."
Many (including Chinese Americans) don't realize that Chinese served in all US wars going as far back as the Civil War! According to historians and researchers, about 80 served in the Civil War, 100 in WWI and 20,000 in WWII. It's only been recently that I've begun to appreciate that in my family I have not one but two members who served in the US military. My father served in the army in WWII and my older brother, Peter Eng (now deceased), served in Vietnam. More on this later. |
